Having been a staple in the Hammond community for 25 years, the Hammond office of Northwest Indiana Nephrology changed its location about a year and a half ago.
The endoscopy unit portion of the new Cancer Care Center at Franciscan Health Munster was blessed by the Rev. Francis Tebbe, director of mission services, before standing-room-only crowd of officials, staff members and guests, Nov. 15. The unit opened to patients the next day. The remainder of the multi-million-dollar comprehensive cancer care facility is scheduled to open in late summer 2018. The endoscopy unit offers four procedure rooms and 14 holding-preparation-recovery rooms, along with the latest, high-definition diagnostic equipment.

In the next major development toward building a new La Porte Hospital, officials at the hospital have selected a primary architect for the project. Gresham, Smith and Partners – a nationally-recognized firm of architects, engineers, interior designers, and planners with more than 50 years in business – will serve as the lead architectural firm. Hospital design is one of their specialties. The hospital has also begun working with local engineers from RQAW in La Porte for initial site preparation work, and Randall Miller & Associates, Inc., from Marion, Indiana, is overseeing the site survey.
The Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults organization of Franciscan Health Hammond welcomed its latest members during a swearing-in ceremony recently in the chambers of Lake Superior Court Civil Division Judge Diane Kavadias Schneider in Crown Point. Probate Commissioner American McAlpin, seated, officiated this year. The program, instituted in 2001 and the brainchild of then-hospital president Tom Gryzbek, is a collaborative effort between the hospital and the court system. It provides trained and supervised volunteers to serve as court-appointed legal guardians to assist the elderly and the courts in decision-making regarding seniors’ needs.
